President Separmurad Nyazov's regime has total control of the media, including the Internet, which barely exists in the country. The state-owned Turkmen Telecom is the only ISP permitted. The website of the Prague-based Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, which is funded by the US Congress, is one of the rare sources of independent news.
